Tell us about Cliff Family Winery — how’d you get your start?
In 1992, when we started Clif Bar & Company, we were driven by our passion for food and adventure and a desire to create convenient, portable and above all delicious food for today’s busy lifestyles. Several years later, in 1997, we moved with our family to the Napa Valley. What started as a home in the country soon developed into a wonderful adventure in winemaking and a deeper commitment to sustainability and farming.
Today, on our Food Alliance and CCOF-certified farm, we grow a variety of fruits and vegetables that make their way to our Clif Family Bruschetteria Food Truck and into and our preserved fruit and vegetable products. For our wines, we source our fruit from some of the best vineyards in the Napa Valley and Mendocino appellations, working with growers that have demonstrated a commitment to the environment and sustainable farming of their land. Our Cabernet Sauvignon wines come from our organically farmed Howell Mountain estate vineyards. In the Spring of 2018, we purchased an 80-acre vineyard in Napa Valley’s famed Oak Knoll District. We are looking forward to our first harvest from this organically farmed vineyard in 2022.
Our goal is to craft unique, regional wine and foods using practices that care for the earth and to support growers who use sustainable and organic farming methods. In this way, we can contribute to a more vibrant and healthy food community. We hope that as you discover our products, Clif Family becomes a part of your own adventure, reminding you to slow down and find pleasure in everyday life.
Share about your wine — what makes you unique? How do you stand out in one of the most famous wine areas in the world?
Clif Family Winery is unique in that we are a small, family-owned producer that makes many different varietals, from Gewurztraminer to Grenache to Petite Sirah to Cabernet. And, we pride ourselves in doing them all well! Sustainability is at the forefront of every decision we make, including taking great care of all the people that work for us. Our commitment to quality wine, our people, and our exceptional hospitality — that's what makes us stand out from the hundreds of other Napa Valley wineries.
How do you produce sustainably? What does that look like for your team?
We have 3 key areas of sustainability:
Sustainable Food & Farming: Source sustainably and organically grown grapes, olives, and other ingredients from local and regional farms and promote biodiversity in our local community.
Renewable Energy/Climate Neutral Footprint: Climate neutralize the energy use from all aspects of our business.
Meaningful Partnerships: Support non-profit organizations that promote family farms, conserve wildlife habitat and biodiversity and promote recycling and waste reduction.
What is that process like (especially compared to wineries that may not be as sustainable in their production)? How will you continue to push the standards of sustainability in the wine industry?
We support growers who practice organic/sustainable/local farming methods: We are committed to partnering with growers that farm organically or are certified through a third-party certification program such as Napa Green or the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. Our Cold Springs and Croquet Estate Vineyards are CCOF certified organic and Napa Green certified.
Clif Family Farm is CCOF Certified: In 2010, Clif Family Farm became certified organic by CCOF. Our commitment to organic farming goes hand-in-hand with our goal to grow food in ways that nurture the land, protect wildlife, and benefit communities and people’s health.
Food Alliance Certified: In September 2011, we became Food Alliance certified on the Home Farm. Food Alliance provides comprehensive third-party certification for social and environmental responsibility in agriculture and the food industry.
Seed Saving Project: Seed is the foundation for all that we grow, nurture, and share with our local community. In 2013, we began our first seed-saving program at the farm to pass on the flavors and history of our farm from season to season.
Offset Carbon Emissions from Business Practices: Our power for all of our farm properties, administrative office and tasting room come from MCE Clean Energy’s Deep Green program. With Deep Green, 100% of our power comes from non-polluting wind, solar power, and biogas.
Create meaningful partnerships: We have partnered with Seed Matters to support their initiatives to improve the viability and availability of organic seed to ensure healthy, nutritious and productive crops. We also partner with many local community organizations that are working to enhance the lives and wellbeing of our local community.
