The Good Company Tour is Jack Symes' inaugural album concert tour, but it's much more than just an album promotion. Jack has decided to team up with the Surfrider Foundation and donate all proceeds from the events to support Surfrider's current environmental initiatives. Between growing up in California and working at local Patagonia stores, Jack has become a passionate steward of the ocean, and wants to use his platform as an artist to help protect it. After partnering with Jack's team to help design an awesome (and reusable!) pint cup for the tour, we asked Jack to share a little more of his story with us...
Dearest world of MiiR, singer-songwriter Jack Symes here.
The kind folks at MiiR have so kindly asked me to write a blog post detailing my upcoming tour, our partnership with the Surfrider Foundation, and how this all came to be. So I said, “of course” and here we are.
Quick background on me – I was born and raised in Pasadena CA, graduated from the University of California-Berkeley, and enjoy a good couch sit, always have and always will. I’ve been writing songs and performing since the 9th grade and in the last couple years released my EP “Gargoyles” along with two singles “Roll Me Away” and “Set Me Free”. This year, I’ll be releasing my self-produced debut album titled “Songs for Moms”, exact release date TBD.
After graduating from Berkeley in December 2016, I planned my first tour alongside New Balance enthusiast and singer-songwriter Nat Lefkoff which covered lots California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Wyoming. We played 40 shows over 2 and a half months and it has since set me on this musical career path. Nat and I, both folk musicians, played all sorts of venues: breweries, small clubs, cafes, and many, many homes of people from all walks of life.
Of the 40 shows played, 19 were in friends’ or friends of friends’ living rooms. People welcomed us into their home and gave us the opportunity to perform for their friends and families in the most intimate of settings. Growing up, I never attended a house concert and didn’t really know that these kind of events even existed. Our shows often ended up being incredibly conversational and personal, full of stories, and laughs, and led to us meeting all sorts of generous and interesting now friends across the western US.
When reflecting on the tour last winter and planning this upcoming tour, I wanted to find a way to use these warm, open environments that folk music can create to have some larger impact than a simple listening experience. Six months later, we started planning The Good Company Tour which will take place this coming June and will benefit Surfrider Foundation chapters all up the CA coast.
Post 2017 tour, I worked at the Patagonia stores in San Francisco and Pasadena and was introduced to the Surfrider Foundation and their efforts to preserve our ocean, beaches and coastlines, and in particular, their Drilling is Killing campaign, which aims to protect our marine environments from the damage caused by offshore oil drilling and related seismic exploration. Having earned my degree in Energy and Climate Policy at Berkeley, I strongly feel that the Surfrider Foundation is a very important organization effectively defending our oceans, fighting the right fight during this rocky time in our country’s environmental history.
The Good Company Tour will be made up of 12 shows taking place in a grab bag of homey venues along the CA coast. Thanks to our eco-focused sponsors MiiR, Bureo, ToGoWare, Manda Naturals, Arvin Goods, All Good, Guayaki, Mohinders, and M Special Brewing, we’ll be raffling off and selling custom Good Company Tour products from these generous companies with all proceeds going to Surfrider’s Drilling is Killing campaign. MiiR has kindly donated signature Good Company Tour stainless steel cups that you can buy at a show or online at jacksymesmusic.com. We’ll have reps from Surfrider at every show where people can learn more about to get involved with their local chapter.
Super stoked for this tour and grateful for all helping hands along the way that have made it possible. We’ll have all sorts of friends opening along the way including Nat Lefkoff, Lindsey Wall, Garrett Wax, Joe Costner and other pals. I’ll be performing songs off the new album Songs for Moms in addition to some older tunes, so come say hi and get a sneak peek at the new record.
Hope to see you MiiR lovin', beverage drinking folks at a show.
