The Empowerful Podcast was created to share the profound stories of movers and shakers who are positively impacting the world. Together, we believe we can amplify that change. We live by the motto of an old African Proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Welcome to the Empowerful Podcast New Color Series. The world is full of color, and we're telling stories about them. Stories of people and places we've been shaped by throughout our pursuit of empowering people for a better future.
In today's episode, we continue our New Color Series with Nicole Bassett, Co-Founder and CEO of The Renewal Workshop. Nicole has dedicated her life to the pursuit of merging sustainability and business. She was the perfect guest to help us roll out our new color, Home, and discuss the role we all have to play in protecting this one "pale blue dot" we all call home. Tune in for a conversation on the circular economy, business sustainability, and Nicole's amazing life journey.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We have all heard about the three "Rs" since sustainability became a mainstream topic. However, did you know there is intentionality in the order of those three words? Notice how reuse, comes before recycle? Nicole Bassett certainly did. Recycling, while a better alternative to the landfill, comes with it's own set of issues and limitations. Nicole looks at traditional product life cycles and wants to know what products can be reused rather than recycled (or even landfilled). This philosophy has coined the term "the Circular Economy", meaning taking products at the end of their lifecycle and renewing them to make them useful once again.
Enter The Renewal Workshop. The Renewal Workshop (or TRW for short) works with a myriad of large brands across the outdoors and garment industry to help them bring products back to market that traditionally would have ended up in the landfill. Through this work, Nicole and TRW are on track to divert 1 million pounds of waste from landfills by 2025. Throughout this journey, Nicole has continued to educate others on the Circular Economy through public speaking events and business consulting. As we continue to come together to battle the environmental threats facing our home planet, it's important to remember the full story of the three "Rs." Thanks for reminding us, Nicole!
At MiiR, we are constantly striving to find new ways to increase our sustainability and decrease our environmental footprint. These terms are just buzzwords to us, they are baked into who we are as a company. Over the last 10 years, MiiR has certified as a B Corp, 1% for the Planet member, and Conservation Alliance member. This year, we were honored to join the inaugural cohort of brands certifying as Climate Neutral. This certification represents a pledge we have made to offset 100% of our carbon footprint, this year and always.
Along this journey of both decreasing emissions as well as purchasing offsets, we have taken a hard look at our waste stream and product lifecycle. Which is why we were so excited to talk to Nicole and discuss our goals for a new Re:Claimed line. This product line, while still in its infancy, aims to take MiiR products that have been misprinted, cosmetically damaged, or overstocked and refurbish or reprint them for future use. We still have a lot to learn along this journey, but we have committed to diving into the process and learning along the way. We hope to continue this conversation with Nicole long into the future as we strive to join the Circular Economy.
