Urban ArtWorks is a Seattle-based nonprofit that provides opportunities for contemporary artists and local youth to work together to create public works of art. Their goal is to empower young people through professional opportunities in the arts. Since 1995, they have collaborated with more than 2,000 youth to bring art to public and private spaces throughout Seattle neighborhoods.
"Our mission is to create public art that empowers young people and transforms communities."
Programs like the Young Curator Program and the Intern/Apprentice Program get youth immersed in the planning process of creating public art; from scouting a wall, applying for permits, communicating to clients, ordering supplies, and conceptualizing and executing ideas. This allows young people to build confidence and tangible skills, as well as overcome challenges they may have faced in the past.
