Getting Vacuum Insulation "Just Right"

Ashley Gateless on

We’ve all encountered this scenario - you open your vacuum insulated vessel hoping to enjoy the cold ice cream, hot tea, or tasty soup that you hiked so far into the desert, mountains, forest, or cubicle, only to find a lukewarm mess that does nothing to satisfy your taste buds. You waited just too long to enjoy your treat.

Just in time, and straight from the desk of our adventure scientist, here are a couple ways to get the most of your vacuum insulated vessel and enjoy your hard earned snacks at a temperature Goldilocks would approve of.

MiiR Food Canister

Preheat your vessel.  Before you fill your container with delicious squash soup, fill it with hot or boiling water and allow it to sit for a minute or two. This will raise the temperature of the inner wall and in the process lower the temperature of the water. Now, when you pour in your soup it won’t have to heat up those cold steel walls.

Chill Out.  No, it isn’t safe to place your full vacuum insulated anything in the freezer. When water freezes, it expands, which could deform or even break your container. However, you can leave the lid off of an empty container and place it in the fridge to cool it off before packing your to-go ice cream sammie. Just like in tip #1 - this will save your treat from doing the work of bringing the container to temperature.

MiiR Food Canister

Fresh for Longer.  So we’ve solved the temperature troubles, what about freshness? By keeping dry goods in an airtight container, you can extend the life of your less temperature sensitive foods. No more lumpy sugar, bland coffee beans, or soggy crackers on your next #vanlife excursions.

*MiiR employees field tested these methods, results are not certified by any official scientific standards.*
